Timbaland launched a thousand blog headlines earlier this week when he revealed that he was secretly in love with the late Aaliyah on a teaser clip from his E! True Hollywood Story. Stop us if you’ve heard this before, but they say R. Kelly is a nasty bastard. Although Chris Hansen has long been waiting for Pissy to give him a reason, the former Zorro enthusiast and alleged playground peeping Tom hasn’t been suspected of doing anything that would lead him to giving a private performance of “12 Play” to a big booty bitch named Brandon in prison.
But, there is one man out trying to dig up Robert’s past for profit. In a new book called The Man Behind The Man (sounds inspired by gay porn or Terry McMillan’s marriage), Demetrius Smith Sr. says that R. Kelly married the late Aaliyah because he got her pregnant.
Nippy was all smiles as she dashed through an airport this weekend with Nympho Babbii [those were the days] in tow. It was only just a few summers ago when she was shopping in the plus size department. Memories!
With all that has been going on its easy to forget that a song from what is being called Whitney’s comeback album last week. “I Didn’t Know My Own Strength” was penned for our lady Nip by hit-maker Diane Warren, who has written for artists such as Toni Braxton, Aaliyah, Monica, Celine Dion, LeAnn Rimes, amongst others.
Jury selection was completed at R. Kelly’s child pornography trial Thursday amid contentious exchanges between prosecutors and defense attorneys, who accused each other of trying to stack the panel along racial lines.
Of the 12 jurors who will open the case, eight are white and four are black. The four alternates include two blacks, one Hispanic and one white.
There are four African Americans: a man in his 40s who works as a chef; a self-described Christian in his 50s who knows of Barry Hankerson (the uncle of late singer Aaliyah who could potentially be called as a witness); a female teacher’s aide in her late 20s or early 30s; and a middle-aged woman who is married to a pastor and resides in Olympia Fields, the same neighborhood Kelly lives in.
The eight white jurors consist of a man in his 40s who previously served as a juror on a another case; a twentysomething female criminal-justice student; a compliance officer in his 30s; an executive and father of two; a man who says he’s seen faded-out clips of the alleged video on the news but can judge the case fairly; a male recent college graduate who was once arrested for possession of marijuana and underage drinking; a 68-year-old Romanian-American who said he’s “probably not the smartest guy but will do what is best and fair”; and a young female athletic trainer who admitted to having once been the victim of rape. RISING ABOVE THE PAIN
IN THE BEGINNING
…Around this time, in the summer of 1994, 27-year-old Kelly secretly married 15-year-old R&B singer Aaliyah, but the marriage was eventually annulled. Meanwhile, Andrea’s own relationship with Kelly blossomed during those long hours on the road. “It’s a love story,” she says. He dazzled her with his humor, telling her yo’ mama jokes and doing impressions. “He’s silly, and I am just a silly person. He’s a jokester,” she says.”We started out just as friends–artist and choreographer. You are traveling on the bus. The more you are together, the more you learn.”
The two were married in 1996 in a small, nontraditional ceremony in Colorado. Two homes, many backyard barbecues and three children followed. In better days they smile into cameras like young lovers. In one photograph they’re laughing and teasing each other as they cook in the backyard. But as the couple settled into domesticity, controversy dogged their heels.
A LIFE APART
. . . But did she see the tape?
“Why would you ask that question of a woman married with children?” she says. “It’s ludicrous to ask me a question like that. Really, would you want someone to ask you that? And if they did ask you, would you see the tape?” All that to say, no, she hasn’t seen the tape and never looked for it. And for all those people who sought out the tape, she says, check your morals.
Still, despite her vocal support of her husband, Andrea says she won’t be accompanying him to his court appearances. All the media, all the mess. Besides, she’s got to be with the children. “I will take care of the home front,” she says and, with perfect comedic timing, adds, “There is a war going on, and they don’t send every soldier in America to Iraq. I’ve got to be homeland defense.”
Missing You
It was five years ago today that fans were rocked by the tragic death of Aaliyah, but the Brooklyn-born songstress is far from forgotten.
“Her passing was probably the hardest out of all the people we lost in the hip-hop world,” said Mister Cee, a deejay at Hot 97 (WQHT-FM), who is hosting an hour-long tribute to the angelic-faced singer during his “Throwback at Noon” show today.
“I just want listeners to know we haven’t forgotten her. It’s keeping her spirit alive,” the deejay said.
Aaliyah was only 22 when she and eight others were killed in a plane crash in the Bahamas, where she had been shooting a video.
The twin-engine plane was overloaded by 700 pounds when it went up in flames. Investigators also found cocaine and alcohol in the pilot’s system.
