Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour on Dec. 29 suspended the life sentences of two sisters jailed for an armed robbery that netted just $11—but the release of one sister will require her to donate a kidney to the other.

“To date, the sisters have served 16 years of their sentences and are eligible for parole in 2014. Jamie Scott requires regular dialysis, and her sister has offered to donate one of her kidneys to her,” Barbour said in a prepared statement, according to The Hattiesburg American.

“The Mississippi Department of Corrections believes the sisters no longer pose a threat to society. Their incarceration is no longer necessary for public safety or rehabilitation, and Jamie Scott’s medical condition creates a substantial cost to the State of Mississippi.”

According to The American, in 1993 the sisters lured two men down a road where they were robbed by three teens. The Scott sisters were convicted of robbery with a deadly weapon in the incident and each received reportedly unusual double life prison sentences. The teenagers who allegedly carried out the robbery only served two years in prison.

Barbour’s statement said that he asked the Mississippi Parole Board to review the Scott’s case, and that they supported his decision to suspend their sentences.

According to the Associated Press, the sisters have received support from national groups including the NAACP. A march for them earlier this year drew hundreds of people.

A release date for the sisters has not been decided, and will be set by the Mississippi Department of Corrections, according to Jackson, Miss. NBC affiliate WLBT. (source)

The attorney for Michael Jackson’s doctor, Conrad Murray, today aggressively contested media reports — based on a leaked witness report — that Murray attempted to hide evidence and delayed calling 911 as Jackson lay dying and said investigators rushed to implicate Murray in the star’s death.
Conrad Murray’s attorney says L.A. police may have botched the investigation.

“It’s just a bold-faced lie,” Ed Chernoff said in an exclusive interview with “Good Morning America” that aired today. “[The] doctor called 911 as soon as he could… Let me just say, unequivocally, he did not – he was not cleaning up any bottles… The scene was not consistent with anyone trying to clean something up.”

Chernoff said Murray did not immediately call 911 because there was no house phone in the room where Jackson was and he could not leave his patient to make the call.

Murray stands accused of administering the lethal dose of a powerful sedative that killed the pop superstar. He pleaded not guilty to manslaughter in February.

Chernoff said his client isn’t responsible for the star’s death, and that police rushed to blame someone.[source]

Tina Douglas told a Manhattan jury earlier this week that Devard Hurd attached photos of male genitals to some of the more than 30 rambling text messages sent to her cell phone over several weeks earlier this year.

“It was just disgusting and humiliating and extremely frightening,” Douglas said.

Hurd, a gym worker from Indiana, was arrested in July on charges of stalking and harassment after ignoring repeated warnings by Ashanti’s family to stop trying to contact her through her mother, Assistant District Attorney Carolina Holderness said in opening statements.

Defense attorney Richard Verchick said Hurd was misunderstood.

“Sending pictures and texts is not crime,” he said. “The intent was never to harass Tina or Ashanti. … What he wanted was what we all want in life – love.”

Douglas, who manages her daughter, testified that she “freaked out” and pulled her daughter out of a rehearsal of “The Wiz” after receiving a text that mentioned seeing Ashanti’s car as it arrived at the theater.

“I was afraid this person could have been in New York,” she said. “I wanted to protect my daughter.”

Letterman made the announcement during taping of the “Late Show.”

“This morning, I did something I’ve never done in my life,” Letterman told his audience, according to a release from Worldwide Pants Inc. “I had to go downtown and testify before a grand jury.”

The 62-year-old funnyman said he received a package three weeks ago from a person who claimed to have information about Letterman’s sexual dalliances, ultimately demanding $2 million to prevent public revelation.

Letterman said he went to the Manhattan District Attorney’s office, which conducted an investigation, and an arrest was made earlier Thursday.

In his grand jury testimony, Letterman said, he revealed the relations with members of his staff.

To tell the truth, I don’t blame the failed extortionist. We are in a recession and you have to “get it how you live.” Besides, Letterman should have been more discreet like Sheree’s nuts during a Derek Blanks photoshoot.
