Ford Motor Co issued an our bad for proposed advertisements in India that place emphasis on the Figo hatchback’s large cargo capacity by depicting caricatures of celebrities bound in the trunk alongside the tagline “Leave your worries behind with the Figo’s extra-large boot.”
“All of us at Ford and JWT were as shocked as you were,” Ford global marketing chief Jim Farley said today. “We are extremely sorry about the incident. It is not acceptable.”
The second ad depicts race car driver Michael Schumacher abducting rivals Lewis Hamilton, Sebastian Vettel and Fernando Alonso. The third shows former Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi, who was charged with paying for sex with a minor, behind the wheel with a trio of half-naked women in the trunk.
The ads caused an uproar online and came just after India passed a new law on violence against women following a fatal gang rape of a student on a bus that prompted mass protests and spotlighted the status of women in India.
