Last week, an Applebee’s waitress posted a photo on Reddit of a receipt from an alleged pastor who, instead of leaving the suggested 18 percent tip, wrote “I give God 10%, why should you get 18.” She also wrote the word “Pastor” above her signature. She should’ve scribbled “Ya’ll must’ve forgot!” on it while she was at it.
After the bill went viral, the waitress says she was fired for “embarrassing someone who directly insults their server on religious grounds.”
The server, Chelsea Welch, posted the photo on Reddit, adding, “My mistake sir, I’m sure Jesus will pay for my rent and groceries.”
Pastor Alois Bell of the 15-member World Deliverance Ministries Church located in Granite City, Ill. points out that she left a $6.29 cash tip on the table. She also adds that she is sorry for what happened.
“My heart is really broken,” she told The Smoking Gun. “I’ve brought embarrassment to my church and my ministry.”
Bell said she learned that a copy of the receipt was online when a friend called her to say she was “all over Yahoo.” Yahtzee! She then called the Applebee’s to complain.
Welch told Yahoo! News she is shocked she was fired. But even more shocked by Bell’s message.
“I come home exhausted, sore, burnt, dirty and blistered on a good day,” she said in her email to Yahoo! “I’ve been stiffed on tips before, but this if the first time I’ve seen the Big Man used as reasoning.”
In a written statement, Applebee’s confirmed that Welch was fired, saying:
“Our Guests’ personal information – including their meal check – is private, and neither Applebee’s nor its franchisees have a right to share this information publicly. We value our Guests’ trust above all else. Our franchisee has apologized to the Guest and has taken disciplinary action with the Team Member for violating their Guest’s right to privacy. This individual is no longer employed by the franchisee.”
Do you think the waitress deserved to be fired?
