Daily Mail – An Indiana special education teacher has been fired for allegedly slapping a student.
The teacher, 42-year-old Gail Marie Huff, was fired from Attica Elementary School after a unanimous vote by the five-member school board to cancel her employment contract. Huff says she did nothing wrong.
‘I’m innocent,’ Huff told the local news station, WLFI.com. ‘Child Protective Services investigated, they found the case to be unsubstantiated. But, for some reason the school board has decided that they find me guilty, even though CPS is the one to investigate child abuse cases and they found me innocent.’
Huff says the accusations stem from an incident where she tried to scold a student for spitting in her classroom.
The student wouldn’t stop spitting after she asked several times, so she put her fingers to the student’s lips to communicate that the behavior was wrong, she says. A few days later, the principal of Attica Elementary informed her of allegations that she had slapped the student.
In her Facebook profile, Huff, a mother of three boys, writes that she is a ‘teacher of seven wonderful students with special needs.’
She said she received her teaching degree in May of 2009 after spending more than a decade raising her three sons. The board that fired Huff oversees two schools in the tiny town of Attica, which has a population of roughly 3,200 and is located roughly 80 miles Northwest of Indianapolis.
