…and when I say “quick” I mean it!
Dr. Dre’s protégé Kendrick Lamar practically came out of nowhere and is not a man of many words. His mixtape ‘Overly Dedicated’ blew up in 2010 and his independent album ‘Section. 80’ on iTunes in 2011. But, the rap newcomer says he’s not bothered about battling country queen Taylor Swift for Billboard’s #1 album this week.
“I’m not trying to go outside of my boundaries,” Kendrick tells DJ Vlad. “[I] really can’t compete with that. All I can do is supply my base, feed my base.”
The streets must be starving because sales estimates say ‘Good Kid: M.A.A.D City’ is on track to move up to 240,000 copies.
Kendrick didn’t speak on Shyne’s tweets that say his album is “traaaaash” and hasn’t “lived up to the hype.” But he did speak on the overwhelming crowd at the Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles this week. Following a tweet about the impromptu performance in a parking lot, hundreds of people showed up and the evening ended with the S.W.A.T. team and helicopters showing up to shut the show down.
Kendrick’s quick thank you to his hometown: “It was a beautiful thing knowing your city backs you like that.”
