Days after becoming the first African American gymnast to win her sport’s biggest prize Gabby Douglas tells the Associated Press that she was left confused when she discovered people online were debating her hair. Girl, I am too.

“I don’t know where this is coming from. What’s wrong with my hair? I’m like, `I just made history and people are focused on my hair?’ It can be bald or short, it doesn’t matter about (my) hair. Nothing is going to change. I’m going to wear my hair like this during beam and bar finals. You might as well just stop talking about it. I don’t think people should be worried about that. That’s so damn tacky, to talk about such things when she should be congratulated….TMZ has a post up about her mother filing for bankruptcy and it literally lists off who she owes money to and how much…the f*ck is that about? Now I like gossip as much as the next person, if not more, but damn, why can’t people just be proud of her and keep their negative comments to themselves?

    This had me so mad the other day because I’m frustrated that instead of talking about her accomplishments and basking in her victory, I, as a failed gymnast (Man, I got too tall too fast and to this day I’m clumsy as all get-out) was sitting up mad and frustrated at these simpletons talking about her hair. I didn’t even NOTICE it until someone said something ignorant on Twitter.
    Then there was someone on Facebook whining about her nickname being “Flying Squirrel”. I’m like “That’s been her nickname for years and if she didn’t like it we would have never heard it.” which apparently doesn’t matter.
    Then someone complaining that the news referred to her host mother as her “second mom”. I’m like “BUT HER OWN MOTHER SAID IT FIRST!”

    It seems like no matter what side you’re on, you’re distracting from what actually happened-I’m guilty too because I respond to the madness. It’s so frustrating to FINALLY have an American woman-a black one at that-who won gold medals in both team and individual all-around competition at the gahdamn OLYMPICS who is so mired in fake controversy.

    The more she talks, the more iLove her (youngings like her give me hope for our future).

    There are some adults that can take a lesson from Gabby on how to respond to hate and jealousy (looking at you the entire cast of RHOA, BBW, Love &HipHop).

    What I found infuriating was the fact she had to take time out of her day from being an awesome Olympic athlete to respond to this fuckery.  Bad enough that NBC refuses to give her the proper respect due during their coverage of gymnastics.  Even worse, you have a tea party MFer claiming she wasnt’ “patriotic enough.”  She also has to add self-hating negroes to the ”wide world of haters” to her list.
